Name: Jim MonaghanHeight: 5'8"Weight: 150
Prior to joining WDHA, Jim spent a number of years as part of the New York/New Jersey sports media corps covering the Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants, Knicks, Nets, Devils and Rangers. Jim has over 25 years of experience coaching and playing baseball. He spent two years in baseball management with the Newark Bears. and coached the Don Bosco Prep freshman baseball team to back-to-back Bergen County championships for the only time in the school's history. He's also an instructor with Professional Baseball Instruction in Bergen County.
It usually never happens this way...not with a "backup" quarterback at least. Amid a flurry of activitiy including a contract that may or may not have been fully examined before the trade was announced, a shirt for sale on the Jets website almost immediately, the trade in danger of not happening at all, a private jet with the player's number on the tail landing in Morristown, grade school kids in Chatham and Madison already running around claiming that a new Jet player is moving into their town, and assurances that Mark Sanchez is indeed still their #1 quarterback, the Jets managed to secure the back pages of the Post and Daily News for a few days with the announcement that they were bringing in Tim Tebow to back up Mark Sanchez.
In just a short while, the Jets will hold a press conference at their Florham Park training facility. They're expecting such a crush of media that the team moved the festivities into the field house instead of the media room where they usually hold such events.
Team officials have gone to great lengths to insist Sanchez is still their guy, that he's still the #1 quarterback on this team. They point to the 4 playoff road wins and two appearances in the AFC Championship Game in consecutive seasons as evidence that he can be a top quarterback in the NFL. And let's not forget that he's still just 25 years old.
But consider this - not too long ago, the Jets had to color code the offensive system so that Sanchez would have more ease in knowing when to throw the ball. The Jets also took a flyer on Peyton Manning before Eli's older brother worked out a deal with Denver. And now they've gone and traded for someone who will perhaps be the highest profile backup quarterback in the history of the league.
And we're supposed to believe that 1) Sanchez is still the #1 quarterback and 2) Tim Tebow is going to be happy running a limited number of plays per game?
I'm sorry, but I'm not buying what Jets management is trying to sell here. I expect lots of smiles today, and plenty of assurances that both Sanchez, Tebow, and head coach Rex Ryan are all on the same page with regard to the quarterback hierarchy. For that matter, training camp could easily go without incident. But FWIW, my gut tells me that come late October, Mark Sanchez will be spending a lot of time on the sidelines wearing a baseball cap and holding a clipboard.
