I always try to keep our Rock N' Ruff blogs positive as there are so many good stories to tell. I do however feel it is my responsibility because I write an animal blog for our AMAZING DHA listeners to write from the heart and tell many different stories.
In case you haven't heard of the plight of Lennox the Pit Bull, here is the story in a nut shell. Lennox is a Pit Bull mix, that was taken into custody 2 years ago because of his breed. It's called "Breed Specific Legislation". Basically large dogs are deemed dangerous because of their size and breed mix. Despite the pleas of Lennox's owner and a viral campaign that migrated through the US and Britian, Lennox has been euthanized. Although Lennox never bit anyone, there was still a concern for public safety according to the courts. His owners (The Barnes family) never got a chance to say goodbye or retrieve his body. He died alone after being someone's pet.
Listen friends, I would never get preachy...it's not my style to tell you which breed of dog works for you. However, what I can tell you is breed discrimination is unfair and unwarranted. I have been working with loving, exceptional Pit Bulls and Pittie types with our Rock N' Ruff program for more than two years. They are loving companions, and make great pets. They are just like your dog. And if you have a large "deemed dangerous breed" this could happen to you as well if Breed Specific Legislation is active in a place you decide to reside in. This story made me ill as I followed it and hopefully will be an education for some people. That's why I'm blogging about it. My hope is something so unfair will never happen again.
R.I.P. Lennox.
