R.I.P. Lennox...breed specific legislation is wrong.
Posted 7/11/2012 3:40:00 PM

I always try to keep our Rock N' Ruff blogs positive as there are so many good stories to tell. I do however feel it is my responsibility because I write an animal blog for our AMAZING DHA listeners to write from the heart and tell many different stories.

In case you haven't heard of the plight of Lennox the Pit Bull, here is the story in a nut shell. Lennox is a Pit Bull mix, that was taken into custody 2 years ago because of his breed. It's called "Breed Specific Legislation".  Basically large dogs are deemed dangerous because of their size and breed mix.  Despite the pleas of Lennox's owner and a viral campaign that migrated through the US and Britian, Lennox has been euthanized. Although Lennox never bit anyone, there was still a concern for public safety according to the courts. His owners (The Barnes family)  never got a chance to say goodbye or retrieve his body. He died alone after being someone's pet.

Listen friends, I would never get preachy...it's not my style to tell you which breed of dog works for you. However, what I can tell you is breed discrimination is unfair and unwarranted. I have been working with loving, exceptional Pit Bulls and Pittie types with our Rock N' Ruff program for more than two years. They are loving companions, and make great pets. They are just like your dog.  And if you have a large "deemed dangerous breed" this could happen to you as well if Breed Specific Legislation is active in a place you decide to reside in. This story made me ill as I followed it and hopefully will be an education for some people.   That's why I'm blogging about it. My hope is something so unfair will never happen again.

R.I.P.  Lennox.

Here are some of our beautiful Rock N' Ruff Pitties......great kissers...loving doggies. Don't discriminate.....they don't....they just want love.

Opt To Adopt,

Terrie & Scarlet

well put tc. we have a small dog but I would never discriminate aganst any animal because of breed and or size. This is indeed a sad story. It's nice what you do for all of these animals in need. I enjoy you and Kim and DHA.

    Terrie & Scarlet,
Thanks for blogging about this; in the words of the Best Friends Society attorney "
The simple truth is breed is not a factor in bites. All dogs, like all people, are individuals and deserve dignity and respect. It's up to us to speak out and stop the killing
I am so sadden by this "BDL" its ridiculous! I would adopt all the pitties if I could...great breed!!!
    again thanks

That very cruel of them to take the life of an innocent animal. I don't think dogs and other similar animals don't deserve to be treated so cruelly, even if they do bite. They are animals, they have some natural instincts that we must respect and more often than not it is the fault of the humans.

This is a big mistake that must be corrected as soon as possible. A lot of people don't understand dogs, it is often the owner that is problematic since they are not responsible enough to take good care of their dog the right way. Dogs are truly man's best friend, they only become monsters because of their irresponsible owners.

Animal cruelty cannot be tolerated in any way and it is something that must be punishable with severe consequences. These dogs don't attack with any malicious intent and that is something you cannot take personally. I myself have been bitten by a dog and I don't blame him for doing what he did. We must respect the life of animals too.

Reading about this news makes me filled with anger and hate for those people who took part in this evil law. I have a dog, but I don't think you have to own one in order to feel for these precious creatures. We must learn to respect life and this includes animals too.

This is absolute cruelty to animals and those in the government are so narrow-headed to understand. Dogs are very gentle animals and their actions are the result of mistreatment by their owner. There is never any malice on the part of these animals.

I am totally against this ruling as it violates animal rights. They have no right to take away the life of these gentle animals, especially if they themselves do not have an understanding of what their nature is. Dogs are all neutral creatures, they don't have any malice like humans do, they can do good or bad depending on how the owner has treated them. I think the owner should be the one punished and not the dog.

Absolutely wrong I say, absolutely wrong! What is the point of killing these gentle dogs when the problem is with the owners? Do they really think that this is the solution to the problem?

Who gave them the right to take away the life of these poor animals? Those people have really lost their minds thinking that it is the dog's fault that these are happening. They should instead focus on making the owners responsible for their dog's actions. It's really a stupid law actually.

The reason this legislation is absolutely wrong is because the dog isn't at fault for his behavior. Animals will be animals and they just follow their instincts. The ones that should be held responsible for their actions is the owner and they should be the ones punished instead of the dogs.

Breed specific legislation is a work of heartless people who know nothing about animals. What they are trying to do is just provide a temporary and unnecessary solution to the problem. The truth is, the underlying problem here is the owners - they must be the ones responsible for their dog's actions.
