This winter sucks! Scarlet is depressed and longing for spring days when her paws don't freeze, her mom wants to actually go for long walks and days are longer! Seriously, between the snow, polar vortex and tons of salt everywhere, this has been a rough winter for our pets.
There have been so many obstacles.....always remember to.....
Completely rinse all snow and salt off of your dogs paws when they return from their walks and wipe down their stomachs too. If you ever notice your dog picks up their paws when they walk it could be because the salt is burning them. I usually carry a damp cloth just in case Scarlet seems too uncomfortable.
Coats and sweaters aren't silly...they are sensible...even for big dogs and especially for short haired breeds.
Never, ever leave your dogs or cats outside for long periods and of course never leave your dog in the car...EVER!
Antifreeze is lethal....If you suspect any leaks anywhere.....clean spills thoroughly.
If your dog walks frequently or spends extra time outdoors it's ok to feed them a bit extra....
There are alot of stray cats in my neighborhood. My friends at St. Huberts gave me information and helped me construct a basic shelter so these little guys could have a break from the frigid temperatures...details here on constructing your own. www.humanesociety.org/issues/feral_cats/tips/caring_feral_cats_winter.html#Uu6jrPOpHL8
Also be aware of cats under your car, in your hood or wheel well as they do venture to those places to try and keep warm.
Keep your pets on leash at all times (like we always should do). If they get loose and head into an icy pond or lake...you're screwed.
Take your pet for an exertion if you can. If your dog is dog/people friendly of course, head to a local pet store for some stimulation, or a friends house if they have a dog your dog likes. Even a 30 minute change of scenery is a big deal to your dog. Scarlet hits Petsmart almost every weekend. Socialization, toys and treats...what could be better!?
With 50ish days til spring begins we still have a way to go, however remember WDHA will be our at many spring pet events so we can't wait to see you...! Beginning with Bark For Life in Florham Park on 4/5! Check the Rock N' Ruff events calendar and the DHA Street Scene for details and join us!
