Heart....They were my youth. How many times did I grab the hairbrush and stand in front of the mirror singing Straight On, Barracuda, or sway back and forth to Dog and Butterfly?..... I even got the curly Ann Wilson perm on my jet black hair...(these were the days before my highlights of course) Ann was my IDOL! Nancy...a guitar goddess and completely underrated player. Nancy has rhythm riffs that rival Brad Whitford and Malcolm Young. Heart was quite frankly never recognized as THE band that broke all gender barriers, a band that defined the 70's and 80's. Why? The boys were too afraid to admit how amazing they were. And because the sisters were so gorgeous, they got pushed into the glamour puss role. Not their fault. In the 80's it was style over substance. They were forced to be more stylized to compete in the male dominated decade of hairbands and machismo and guess what? They still created amazing music. Why? They ARE that great....They are Heart afterall...
Fast forward to Fanatic. Their recently released record. A rock record. With Ann's voice as strong and powerful as ever, and Nancy, playing better than she ever has. I'm sure you've heard the electric title track on DHA. From the minute I popped it on, listeners have loved it. Fanatic is a collection of great songs. (and I'm a BIG fan of actual songs) Skin and Bones, Dear Old America and Rock Deep are 3 of my favorites. The sound is fresh, but pure Wilson's.
The sisters released Kicking and Dreaming..."A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll" their incredible autobiography. Pick it up...you will plow through it in a day. The story of 2 kindred musical sisters. Also, check out their boxed set "Strange Euphoria" that is a chronicle of everything Heart. It's an amazng collection.
Heart is also on the ballot this year for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2013. Believe it or not, they are not in yet!..what a joke...But who cares. Let's face it..we all know who kicked the floor, ceiling and our asses when it came to playing with the big boys...Ann and Nancy Wilson.....plain and simple.....one of rock's BEST bands...EVER!
I was honored to moderate a Q&A with Heart after their You Tube presents performance.....It's on this very Box of Rock Page so check it out.........So freakin' cool!
Hail Heart!
I'll see you tomorrow at ten!
