I had a blast when Civic performed for us at WDHA!! As I've said before, I've known their bassist Mikey for a bit of time now, and he's my twin when it comes to music, so I knew his band would be amazing. The band consists of a bunch of good friends who play because they love music, and they love performing it. They aren't in it for the wrong reasons, to me, they are in it for THE reasons.....to make music and bring music to YOU!
Please check out the interview we did, and another track they performed for us at WDHA! You can find out more by heading to www.civicband.com and www.facebook.com/civicnj . They are all extrememly talented musicians and I adored the time I spent with them!!!!! Thank you Civic for being genunie, talented, and just amazing souls!
I found the band "Milan and the Sour Goat" from another band who have been on the homegrown spotlight, Garden State Line. I can't thank Garden State enough, Milan and his crew ROCK!!!! They are a three piece band, but you would never know judging by their insanely loud sound! They were an absolute pleasure to watch, and listen to. They will entertain you with their energy and charisma, but also have you toe tapping and dancing around with their jams! I love love love this band!
When Milan and the Sour Goat performed for our blog I just had this HUGE smile on my face the entire time. You can see how much fun the guys are having as they jam out, and it's contagious. Happiness is contagious! For more information on these guys you can head over to www.sourgoat.com and hopefully they will be making sour goat ...
I had a wonderful time with the band Plantation from Vineland, NJ. Yes, Vineland. Still NJ, but what a hike these guys came to do our acoustic show! I am so, so glad they did!
Plantation sent me their debut EP, and from the first ten seconds I listened to it I knew they had talent. I never know what will happen when a band comes in to perfom acoustic style for the blog, and these guys NAILED IT! Flawless and magical I could've had my own concert all night if time permitted! They have such a unique grunge-esque sound, while lead singer Corey Presner has almost a Myles Kennedy feel. Melodic with tight riffs, just utter professionalism. I dig these guys, alot!
Please give them some love and check out their facebook page at www.facebook.com/PlantationBand or head on over to www.plantationband.com . Their debut "Out of the Dark" is ...
I'm so happy to be posting our first band of 2015, and even happier that they totally ROCK! I've known bassist Mikey for years now, and having the same personal taste in music, I knew his own band HAD to be amazing. I was right, they are AMAZING.
Civic has been a band of friends for a few years to date, and they make music for the pure reason of loving it. They all have adult busy lifestyles, but their passion is music, and it's very evident in their sound. I love them as people, and musicians.
A rock edge, Civic makes it very easy for you to get their music!! They put it online and you can download it, yup that simple! Head on over to www.civicband.com and get your FREE sick tunes! How's that for making music for the right reasons!? You can also find them at www.facebook.com/civicnj ...
Hey everyone! Just wanted to pop in real quick and say that we have our first filming for 2015 in just two weeks!!! Stay tuned for NEW videos, NEW bands, NEW music, and even a new introduction riff in every single homegrown spotlight video! Congrats to the gems in Audio Empire who won a contest for the Best Riff! They of course will be coming on the show to perform it for you all, but look out of their riff to be featured as the New homegrown spotlight song!!! I'm so excited for 2015!!!
If you know a local band who hasn't been on the show!! Whether they want to be on the acoustic blog, or just get a spin on the air send them my way!!!

Just a quick hello and welcome to 2015!!! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season, and are now ready to rock!!!! The WDHA Homegrown Spotlight Blog continues to create new posts for everyone, to bring awareness to the local original music scene. My coworker John H and I are super pumped to start filming new bands at the end of this month, and bring in bands who have previously been on the spotlight, but have new tunes to share!
I would also like to congratulate Audio Empire who have won our create a riff for the blog contest!!! Their song entitled "Bleed like you" will be on every single new video in 2015!!!! Thanks guys for being a band who truly represents WDHA to the core, rock, passionate, and talented! We love you and are so proud of you!
In case you missed our ...
Its been such an amazing ride being the host of the WDHA Homegrown Spotlight on the air, and on the website. I was "born into" the spotlight when I took over the night space show on WDHA about 8 years ago. The Home grown spotlight for those that didn't know, has been around for decades. WDHA has always been a HUGE supporter of local original talent! I was passed the torch in 2006, and have continued playing artists on the air, as well as creating this blog with the help of many WDHA employees, mostly my right hand man John H!
Thank you John H for donating your time to not only film these bands, but produce and edit the videos and pretty much wear any hat handed to you. You are a rockstar and this blog would not be what it is without you by my side. I ...
Where do I begin about these guys! I had the privilege of working with bandmember Zack Kressaty during his internship at WDHA, but I had no idea how amazing his band was until I met them in person. I remember listening to the CD and thinking "phew, this guy is actually good, sure come on my blog!"....but I wasn't prepared to be blown away, and they keep blowing me away.
The Sam Haiman Band has been together for less then a year, has put out an EP, has a tour, and their first ever music video for "Running on Empty!" I couldn't be more proud of these Jersey boys! Ironically they are all in college in Boston, Massachusetts where they met and united as a band, but most of them live and are from NJ! Love this fated band meant to meet!!!!!
I am a huge fan of ...
Sometimes presskits sit on my desk for a very long time, and for that I deeply apologize. I find it hard these days to remember to put my underwear on? let alone check my facebook/twitter/instagram/email etc etc......but I do what I can, and when I DO make the time to sit down and listen to local talent, it's a great privilege and honor.
I happened to find "time" recently and dug through a TON of cds. It was then that I found the band Garden State Line on my desk, and played them on our WDHA Homegrown Spotlight immediately. First track in, they hooked me. The sound is quite unique to the blog, and something I told them the other day, almost "Citizen Cope-esque". Believe me they have their OWN style, but its amazing, and very very different then anything I've heard on my spotlight so far. They rock, ...
Cracked Alice was one of my biggest finds in 2014. They came onto my homegrown spotlight with only hearing them, and hearing about them, it wasn't until that day that we actually met in person. Boy did our first meeting go well! They killed it so much performing live for the blog, that they were picked about two weeks later to compete in our WDHA Homegrown Spotlight Clash For Cash! This is an event we do every year at the racetrack, where four bands "compete" for money! It's a great time, and most of the bands gain new friends/fans. Cracked Alice gained our respect and the judges at WDHA, and were therefore invited to attend this big event.
To see them live and get more information, head on over to their facebook page at www.facebook.com/CrackedAlice or www.crackedalice.us . They are playing this weekend locally at the Mercury Lounge on ...
The Sam Haiman Band was a wonderful addition to our WDHA Homegrown Spotlight blog! Majority of the band is from NJ, but they all met in Boston where they attend college! How fabulous that such talent and bonding all wound up having the same garden state as a root! I'd call it meant to be.
I met the band due to our summer intern being a member, and I was blown away by these guys when they came in to perfrom for the blog. Such talent and personality at quite a young age, they are going places....keep your eyes/ears on this band!
Please take a listen to another song they recorded at the WDHA studios, as well as their interview. For more information head on over to www.samhaimanband.com.
I had such a blast when Killcode came into the WDHA studios to perform for us....as I stated in a previous blog..I had met them at the Gramercy in NYC and they KILLED IT on stage.....Similarly when stripped down to an acoustic level, they hands down blew us away, again. I am such a huge fan of these guys and encourage you to get to a live show when you can!! I have reposted their interview and here's another track from the band!
They have a show 10/11 at The Trash Bar and you can find out where they'll be again at www.killcode.net. I am a HUGE fan of these guys! Please give them some love!
I am the Sam Haiman Band's newest fan!!!! I met them because one of our WDHA interns was a member and snuck a CD my way, but that did not get them in the door....maybe the CD in the hand, but their talent is PHENOMENAL! They are currently studying at Berklee College of Music so it's not a huge shock that they are fantastic musicians, but still, so young, and have so much ahead for them!
I love that they formed this band in Boston where they are attending college, but most of them are all from right here in NJ, WDHA fans! It's quite a unique band for me to have on the blog! I look at them, and see "old souls" or maybe I'm just getting old, but nevertheless I was blown away by the Sam Haiman Band.....
Please give their facebook page some deserved love ...
A few years ago I was fortunate to introduce a few bands at the Gramercy in NYC for a Gotham Rocks production, and I met some of the best bands/people I've ever known. One show changed my entire life! At that very show, I remember the band Killcode coming onto the stage and it was as if Aersomith was performing (as I saw Aersomith last night). The venue was packed and the crowd went INSANE! It had been my first time meeting/seeing these guys and I was absolutely blown away by their performance. They had, they have, the "it" factor. Lead singer Tom Morrrissey's voice is unreal....The harmonizing between him and Chas is music magic. I was so happy to have met this band, but I'm even more happy that they finally came on my homegrown spotlight blog.
The reason I do this blog is to showcase artists in ...
Woods of Arden are one of the longest friendships I'm privileged to have as far as my local homegrown spotlight bands having met them here, and kept the bond!! They are amazing people, and continue to impress me on their musical growth !! I absolutely love this band and everything about them!!! They spent a very very long time working on their latest album, Candidate for Consumption, and I highly suggest you pick up a copy!
For more information you can find these guys on www.facebook.com/WOODSOFARDEN1 ! They play out live and local quite frequently, so check back for a performance near you! You will LOVE them too!
Reese Van Riper is a three piece band with a ton of personality!!!! It does help that the three grew up with eachother, but to me that just demonstrates how insanely amazing their bond is musically and personally. If you follow them on Facebook and/or Instagram you can really see just how much these guys like eachother!! I love it, I find them an absolute pleasure to follow and listen to!
Reese himself has an insane presence from his height to his talent you know when he walks into a room....and he will hold your attention most importantly! I've known Paul for quite a few years now and its an absolute honor to see him succeed in his passion for music. Greg I met during the taping but I feel like I've known him forever since they market themselves so well!
Please give them a listen and ...
When Cracked Alice came in for the WDHA Homegrown spotlight blog, it was my first time seeing/meeting the band and I was beyond blown away by their talent. In fact, they were chosen to be in our Clash For Cash contest at the Meadowlands and placed third!!!! This is an amazing accomplishment being that hundreds of bands applied to be in the show, and that Cracked Alice were very new to the WDHA scene/radar...Well done Cracked Alice again, you impressed everyone at that event, and still do!
To see them live head over to their facebook page www.facebook.com/CrackedAlice AND they are performing live this Saturday night at Arlene's Grocery in NY!!! July 26th!!! If you are in the area looking for a sick show, I definitely suggest heading on down to their gig!
I've attached our previous interview, but here's another acoustic track I haven't posted yet from ...
I actually think Woods of Arden were one of the first bands that became my "real world friends" too and I will always have a special place in my heart for these guys. From the very first time they came in, they were beyond thankful and huge supporters of WDHA and myself. The respect was extremely mutual.
It's awesome to have a blog such as this one from my perspective when bands have been in before, and then come back with new music. I love watching their talent/bonds/styles change and almost always MATURE.
Woods of Arden have been on the blog already, AND the blooper reel(s), but their latest performance at WDHA was beyond amazing. They blew me away with their growth and their new album "Candidate for Consumption" kills it. Please check out their acoustic performance below and defintely give them some well deserved love and support ...
I love love love when I meet a band, and they send me another, and then those send me another, and so on......It's called one big network of amazing people working together to put the power of original music out there! I am blessed to be a part of the scene in the tri state area. It's actually my favorite part about the job. I mean I love being on the air, but being involved in so many peoples' goals and musical paths, is undescribable.
Cracked Alice came in last week and absolutely blew us away. Not only were they FRIENDLY my biggest pet peeve is when a band comes in and isn't...but man oh man can they rock an acoustic set. In fact, we filmed a few songs and lead singer Matthew Paul even went solo on one of them....his voice is a chiller, up the spine....Ladies, you ...
I know I touched upon this with my first blog entry for Madysin Hatter, but I have to reiterate how AMAZING this rocking soul is!!!! Talk about dedicated, passionate, soulful and just a wonderful person all around, I feel blessed to know Madysin in and outside of radio.
Madysin Hatter is a huge fan of WDHA and has been sending me her material for a long time......Well, when I finally had a moment to really give her a good listen, I was sad that it had taken me so long to do so. It was a wake up call how fast life moves and how necessary it is to stop, listen, and love. I love all that is Madysin Hatter......She has been extremely supportive of myself, and in turn I wish only amazing things for this ROCKING female vocalist!!
Please check out our interview if you missed it ...
