You didn't need to be a cast member of "The Big Bang Theory" to know that after the National Football League gave us the Green Bay/Seattle debacle on national television Monday night, an end to the NFL's lockout of game officials would come to an end sooner rather than later. It almost didn't matter what the replacement officials did in the pre-season because the games mean so little. But once the season started for real....
Using a collection of high school, collegiate and even lingerie league officials, the league owners were hopeful that they could keep the 121 regular game officials off the field long enough to get them to crack. The biggest issue? Simply put, it was pensions. Technically, NFL officials are considered part-time employees ...

Why, Melky, Why?

http://youtu.be/9rMoI43qSAU
The news broke last week that former Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera had tested positive for testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance, with the result being a 50-game suspension. Quickly, Cabrera owned up to the transgression and accepted the punishment levied by Major League Baseball. His response was a far cry from the dog & pony show that followed the revelation that 2007 National League Rookie of the Year and 2011 NL Most Valuable Player Ryan Braun had tested positive for a PED.
That is, until the New York Daily News broke a story over the weekend that said a fake website had been set up by a Cabrera associate in an effort to creat doubt about whether Cabrera knew he was taking a banned substance.

The best laid plans....
The Mets went into the All Star Break with a record of 46-40, sitting just a half-game out of the Wild Card. At 48-37, the Pirates were in 1st place in the National League Central Division and had won 8 out of 10 games.
Since the All Star Break, the Pirates have stumbled a bit, and the Cincinnati Reds have gone on a ridiculous tear to pull ahead in the division. But make no mistake, the Pirates are hanging tough at 14 games over .500. The Mets on the other hand have won just 4 of their ...

Mark September 24th On Your Calender

Back in April, I don't think there was anyone on the planet who looked at the New York Mets 2012 schedule and said, "Boy, I sure can't wait for that 4-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates in September." Sure, the Pirates had put together that nice run for a few weeks in 2011, to the point that Kim Mulligan and I dubbed them "our Pirates" on the Morning Jolt before the reality of the 162-game season set in. And coming out of spring training, the Mets had at least a few reasons to be optimistic. But beyond that?
As Major League Baseball comes out of the 2012 All Star break, the reality is that the Pirates have a 1-game lead in the National League Central Division and as winners of 8 of their last 10 games, they're baseball's hottest team. A.J. Burnett - still on the Yankees payroll - has 10 wins, or ...

If This Is Goodbye.... A Tale of Two Teams

Saturday night at the Rock, the New Jersey Devils will attempt to stave off elimination by doing something they've only been able to do once in the first four games of the Stanley Cup Finals - beat L.A. With the exception of the 3-1 New Jersey win in Game 4. the Kings have outplayed the Devils on both ends of the ice, though it really appears that the puck has spent far more time in the Devils zone driving goaltender Martin Brodeur crazy. The casual fan might not know a whole lot about the Kings but through the first three games, Los Angeles has clearly been the better, more athletic team.
But there's more to the story tomorrow night than just the fate of the Devils' 2011-2012 season. It could also be the last time we see Brodeur and Zach Parise on the ice together as members of the team.

This past Sunday Andy Pettitte made his return to the Yankees against the Seattle Mariners. He was met with a resounding ovation both before the game and as he was leaving the field, even though he had given up a pair of home runs and was on the losing end of what was happening. Meanwhile a couple hundred miles to the north, Red Sox Nation was blasting one of their starting pitchers, Josh Beckett, for what is being perceived as a lack of proper commitment to THEIR team.
