Rage Against The Machine celebrates the 20th anniversary of its self-titled debut album today (Tuesday, November 27) with the release of a deluxe edition of the set ("Rage Against the Machine Reissue Released ").
The deluxe edition includes the original album, some bonus live tracks, the group's original demo tape and two DVDs that include the group's June 6, 2010 performance in London's Finbury Park, music videos, live footage from 1992, 1993, 1996 and 1997, and a homemade video if RATM's first public performance on Oct. 23, 1991 in North Ridge, Calif. Public Enemy's Chuck D wrote liner notes for the set.
Guitarist Tom Morello tells us, "It weirdly doesn't feel like 20 years, but at the same time it's sobering that it is...There's no crystal ball that we could've looked into when we were writing these songs in 1991 that we'd be talking about this record two decades later.""It was the record that was made with the most interpersonal solidarity, and it's a record that was made, again, without an expectation of an audience...We just felt, y'know, like just surprised to be making a record."
"Rage Against The Machine" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and has been certified triple platinum. Rolling Stone ranked it No. 368 on its list of 500 greatest albums of all time, and it was one of Q magazine's 50 heaviest albums of all time.
RATM broke up in 2000 but reunited for the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and has been playing periodic shows and short tours ever since, curating its own LA Rising festival during July of 2011 in Los Angeles. Morello says the group has no current plans, however.
