It’s been nearly 20 years since the surviving members of Nirvana have performed together.
After the tragic loss of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994, the group that revolutionized grunge music decided to call it quits. Drummer Dave Grohl went on to form the Foo Fighters later that year, and any chance of the band continuing with a new singer was lost.
But if Nirvana was going to get back together, who would you put in Kurt’s place?
According to The Sun, an unlikely candidate will be stepping in as the lead singer in a reunited version of the band for the 12-12-12 Sandy Relief benefit concert tonight (December 12th) – none other than Sir Paul McCartney!
However, when the 70-year-old former Beatle met with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and part-time member, Pat Smear for a jam session, he had no idea the three of them used to make up Nirvana.
McCartney explains, “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ and somebody whispered to be ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
No details on the length of tonight’s Nirvana/McCartney setlist have been released (or what it will sound like), but there are reports that Grohl, Novoselic and McCartney will be performing a brand new song they have been working on.
