Seattle rock supergroup Mad Season's one and only album, 1995's "Above," is re-released today (April 2) in a special two-CD/DVD package featuring newly recorded songs and live material.
The group was formed after Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready met the Walkabouts' John Baker Saunders in rehab, later adding Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley and Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin.
"Above" was certified gold and launched the radio hit "River of Deceit," but attempts to record a second album, tentatively titled "Disinformation," failed and the group dissolved, with Saunders dying in 1998 and Staley in 2002, both from drug overdoses.
McCready tells us that he felt a range of emotions in revisiting Mad Season's music for the new reissue:
"It's been a lot of mixed emotions. That was a record I couldn't listen to for a really long time, just because of Layne and Baker both dying and the darkness that had kind of followed that record. I'm very proud of it; a lot of people, fans have come up to me and said that's their favorite record and made a difference in their lives, so that made me kind of happy to know it did that...So there's a double-edge sword to me."
The "Above: Deluxe Edition" features three brand new songs that were started for Mad Season's second album, sung by Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan, who also appeared on "Above." The album is rounded out by live audio and video from Seattle's Moore Theatre (previously released on a 1995 DVD) and bonus footage from another Seattle concert.
McCready is currently working on Pearl Jam's next album; the group is currently in South America for shows in Argentina and Chile, the latter a Lollapalooza date.
