After the strong showing of 2010's "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven" and its hits "Heaven Nor Hell" and "A Warrior's Call," the members of Denmark's Volbeat are brimming with optimism as the group brings out its fifth album "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" today (April 9).
Frontman and songwriter Michael Poulsen tells us:
"Without any doubt and without sounding too cliche, I believe this is the strongest work we've ever done. Everything I wanted to accomplish and achieve on our new record is spot-on on this coming album. I just think the songwriting is stronger, the melody is stronger, the melodies are more in-your-face. When it's rock songs it's really huge rock songs, and when it's heavy it's really, really heavy and more heavy then we've ever been before."
"Outlaw Gentlemen..." also marks the debut of the group's new lineup, with former Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano first as the album's co-producer and then as a members of the band.
Poulsen says adding Caggiano to the ranks was a direct result of what he brought to the sessions:
"I asked Rob to cut down some solos and he was totally into that. After putting down some of his ideas here and there, I said, 'Y'know, this is starting to get real interesting. You should just join the band,' and he didn't know where to put his own feet. He was, 'What?!'...The day after he came back to the studio. He said, 'I've been thinking about it. This is an opportunity I cannot say no to. I would love to join the band.' So suddenly we were a whole band again in the studio, and good for us that we got such a talented guy and can go on the road again as a four-piece."
Volbeat has released "Cape of Our Hero" as the first single from "Outlaw Gentlemen..."
The album also includes collaborations with King Diamond ("Room 24") and Sarah Blackwood of Walk Off the Earth ("Lonesome Rider") as well as a cover of Young The Giant's "My Body."
Volbeat will be touring North America until May 12 before returning to Europe to play festivals this summer.
