Smashing Pumpkins have set a June 25 release date for "Oceania: 3D in NYC," a DVD and Blu-Ray filmed during December at Barclays Arena in Brooklyn.
The home video -- which, as the title indicates, was shot in 3D -- features the group performing its latest album, 2012's "Oceania," in its entirety as well as a selection of songs from the Pumpkins' older catalog underneath a custom-made sphere that carried projections throughout the show.
Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan tells us the tour, which is ongoing, has been a unique experience:
"It doesn't feel like a normal concert, so we're really enjoying that part of it. But it's a big challenge. You've definitely got to psyche yourself up to do it because the concentration level's almost like doing a play or something...We had to almost invent new technology to be able to project onto a sphere 'cause I had in my mind I wanted to do a three-dimensional sphere and everyone kept saying 'You can't do that. The images will warp.' They've actually invented computer technologies to kind of alter the images in the computer so when they're projected out they actually don't warp on the sphere. It's pretty wild."
The Pumpkins launch a new U.S. tour on April 29 in Florida and play Rock On the Range on May 18 in Columbus, Ohio, before heading to Europe during June and July. The group also has Japanese dates booked for August.
Meanwhile, Rock Fuel Media -- the company releasing "Oceania: 3D Live in NYC," will release "Jane's Addiction: Live in NYC," another 3D project filmed with LG cellular telephones, on the same date, while future titles from Guns N' Roses and Korn are also due out this year.
