Metallica has set fall rather than summer for the release of its upcoming 3D film "Metallica Through the Never."Though originally planned to roll out August 9, the group has announced a September 27 opening exclusively at more than 300 IMAX theaters for a week before expanding to other venues on October 4.
The film, directed by Nimrod Antal ("Predators," "Vacancy"), stars Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2") as a Metallica crew member who the band sends on a special mission while it's performing live.
Guitarist Kirk Hammett says those performances, filmed last year in Vancouver, will be interwoven with the other action to help tell the story:
"It's a live 3D movie with a storyline that weaves in and out of it. It's not your typical live footage. There's not gonna be, like, footage of us backstage or interviews or anything. It's going to be strictly live footage and a storyline that weaves in and out of the film, and that's something we're all really excited about. It's really, really an intense sort of thing because it's a storyline but there's no real dialogue. It involves a storyline that actually involves the band, and it's actually a very cool thing."
In a statement at Metallica's website, drummer Lars Ulrich exclaimed, "IMAX! It doesn't get bigger or cooler than that! For four guys in a rock band of average height, to get a chance to unleash their 3D film on IMAX screens the size of buildings across the country is a mind-blowing though. 'Hey look, Mom, I'm 50 feet tall (finally!).' There is no better way to experience film and when you throw in the spectacle of music and sound, this should amount to an unprecedented, unique and truly next level experience."
Metallica, which is currently working on a new album, performs Saturday (April 27) in Johannesburg, South Africa and on May 2 at the Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles. The group's second Orion Music + More festival takes place June 8-9 at Belle Isle in Detroit, and Metallica will play Japan's two Summer Sonic festivals on August 10-11 and Rock in Rio on September 19 in Brazil.
