Metallica, Rob Zombie and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi will be the special honorees at tonight's (May 2) Fifth Annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards, taking place at Club Nokia in Los Angeles and airing live on AXS TV and www.revolvermag.com, with a red carpet pre-show hosted by Sebastian Bach at 7 p.m. EST and the ceremony itself at 8 p.m.
Metallica will perform along with Five Finger Death Punch, Stone Sour, Anthrax, Halestorm, Dillinger Escape Plan and Danzig with special guest Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein of the Misfits.
Metallica will receive the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award, while Zombie is getting the Golden God Award and Iommi -- who's currently touring Australia with Black Sabbath -- will take home the Riff Lord Award.
Zombie -- whose new album, "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor," debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart -- tells us that a hallmark of his career has been paying strict attention to details, whether he's working on music or in movies:
"We're always thinking like that. Everybody in the band is very competitive; we never go, 'Oh, this is great, let's just relax.' We're super paranoid and super competitive all the time, and we get off stage and we immediately got to the bus and over-analyze what we just did, and if there's any mistakes, 'Crew meeting!' Yeah, we nit-pick everything and we notice everything. I'm not gonna lie about that."
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, meanwhile, says his band is most proud that it continues to find new endeavors -- such as its Orion Music + More festival and its upcoming 3D movie -- 32 years into its career:
"Right now I think the spirit of Metallica is very much about you kind of throw these things out there and kind of see what happens. So this is not part of some sort of long-range business plan or any of that kind of bullsh*t. It's just more like, 'This would just be really fun to do this type of thing and share that with the people who are passionate about Metallica.'”
Categories at the Golden Gods Awards include Best Guitarst, Best Live Band, Best Metal Athlete, Most Dedicated Fans, Album and Song of The Year and a Best Bassist category named in honor of Slipknot's late Paul Gray.
