Happy 48th Birthday to Trent Reznor, the founder and mastermind behind Nine Inch Nails!
The notoriously brooding star gave industrial rock a facelift in 1989 with the release of NIN’s debut album Pretty Hate Machine. Reznor recorded the album during his off-hours as a janitor at a recording studio in Columbus, Ohio. He not only taught himself to use the studio’s recording equipment, but he also played all of the instruments on the LP. The album would hit #75 on the Billboard 200 and become one of the first indie-label rock albums to sell over a million copies.
After putting together a backing band and making the conscious decision to open for alt-rock acts over industrial ones, Reznor would see a significant expansion of his fan base. In 1992, after a long and brutal legal battle with Reznor’s former record label, TVT, NIN put out Broken, the first release from Reznor’s own label, the Cleveland-based Nothing Records. Within a year, the label reached a semi-iconic status with the signing of true shock-rocker and showman Marilyn Manson.
Reznor’s second full-length NIN album, 1994’s The Downward Spiral possessed a dark ambience in true Reznor fashion, and the hugely-ambitious and widely-anticipated concept album would debut at number two and reach multi-platinum status by July of ‘95. The LP's biggest hit, “Closer,” with its censored video in heavy rotation on MTV, would help to crown Reznor as one of alt-rock’s greatest sex symbols.
Since Reznor’s overwhelming success in the mid-‘90s, the producer and multi-instrumentalist has put out a number of albums with NIN, founded the band How to Destroy Angels with his wife, vocalist Mariqueen Maandig, and broken all ties with his former financier, Interscope Records. He has also scored a number of films, including The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, winning an Academy Award and Grammy, respectively, for his work, along with co-writer Atticus Ross.
After a four-year hiatus, we are glad to hear that Reznor will be returning to NIN this year with a new backing band. The re-invented lineup is set for a U.S. arena tour, with more dates to be announced. In less-than-expected news, the band will be joining Beyonce as headliners in this summer’s second-annual Made in America Festival in Philadelphia.
The best of birthday wishes to the man who has captivated audiences with his groundbreaking take on industrial and alternative rock!
