Smashing Pumpkins will commemorate its recent spate of touring behind its 2011 album Oceania with the September 3 release of "Oceania: Live in NYC," a multi-format package that was recorded and filmed during the group's performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The set will be available as a standard DVD featuring bonus interviews with the band, a Blu-ray with 3D and 2D versions of the show in 24-bit/96kHz audiophile sound, a deluxe two-CD and DVD combination and a digital long-form download.
The 24-song concert included all of Oceania plus a selection of Pumpkins favorites such as "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "Tonight Tonight," "Disarm," "Cherub Rock" and "Zero," as well as a cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity."
Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan tells us that what was most important about the Oceania campaign was it established the legitimacy of the current incarnation of the band -- including guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne:
"I think the key issue is that the album has provided the credibility for people to recognize us as an intact musical unit, and that's the difference. Before the conversation was, 'Who's in the band? Why's in the band? How's in the band? -- the five f*****g questions over and over again. When I saw the hard-core fan base get off it and go, 'Y'know what, he's onto something. Who cares what he calls it, at least he's back, engaged, making music we like,' great. Thumbs-up. Let's get on with it. Once I saw that shift, I knew everything else can follow."
"Oceania: Live in NYC" follows the July 23 release of "Aeroplane Flies High," a six-CD and one-DVD box set that expands the original 1996 rarities compilation.
The Pumpkins are currently touring in Europe, then travel to Japan for Summer Sonic festivals in August, finishing with an August 13 show in Hong Kong.
