This year’s Johnny Ramone Tribute, which took place on Sunday (August 18), drew the largest crowd the event has ever seen and featured some very special guests.
Produced by Linda Ramone, wife to the late Ramones guitarist, along with Johnny Ramone Army, the memorial took place at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA, where fans, friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of Johnny.
This year’s installment, which marked the event’s 9th year, was hosted by the iconic writer/director John Waters, who showed a special directors’ cut of his 1990 cult classic film, Cry-Baby, along with the film’s stars Joe Dallesandro and Traci Lords, who signed autographs.
Surprise guest Johnny Depp also thrilled fans with an appearance, sitting on a panel for a Q&A moderated by Sex Pistols rocker Steve Jones, which also featured Ricki Lake and James Intveld.
Linda Ramone ushered in the evening’s activities with a speech, during which she stated, “This event is something Johnny would have loved. He was such a collector - autographs, movie posters, baseball cards, you name it. Having these amazing autograph signings and screening cult films - this is what Johnny was all about. His legacy was important to him, and it's the most important thing to me to do this event in the honor of my husband," according to the official press release.
Other notable attendees included Dita Von Teese, who introduced the Cry-Baby cast, Shepard Fairey, Michael Des Barres, J.D. King, Pete Yorn, George Kotsiopoulos, Joel Madden, Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), Billy Zoom of X, Keegan Allen, Susan McKagan, Liz Goldwyn, Tennesse Thomas, and Justin Chambers, among others.
Johnny Ramone sadly passed away in 2004 at the age of 55. We’re glad that Linda and Ramones’ fans have found a great way to pay tribute to the late rocker and hope they continue to do so in the years to come!
