Collective Soul has been quiet on the recording front since the 2009 release of its self-titled eighth studio album, but group leader Ed Roland says that will change soon.
With the group's 20th anniversary looming in 2014, Roland tells us that he plans to use a break in the tour schedule for his other group, Ed Roland and the Sweet Tea Project, to "start recording" with Collective Soul.
"We're trying to stay busy, stay ahead of the game," Roland says. "Next year...we'll release a new record and tour. Right now the Sweet Tea thing is truly my passion and we'll see where this will lead, but there will be new Collective Soul (music) for sure." The Collective Soul anniversary date is a bit nebulous; the Atlanta group’s double-platinum debut album, "Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid," came out in June of 1993, but Roland did not put an actual Collective Soul band together until 1994.
"That first album was a demo I made," he explains. "It was truly not really a band. We've talked about going out and maybe doing that whole record acoustically to showcase the song. That's basically what Collective Soul was built upon; all I ever wanted to be was a songwriter. Being a singer came by default -- no one else would sing what I wrote, so I had to do it."
Collective Soul's litany of rock radio hits includes "Shine," "December," "The World I Know," "Where The River Flows," "Precious Declaration," "Listen" and "Heavy."
Collective Soul has a couple of shows booked for October, while the Sweet Tea Project has dates booked into October and will also perform on the Rock Boat cruise during February.
