Pearl Jam fans have been widely anticipating the release of Lightning Bolt, the band’s first new studio album since 2009’s Backspacer, since it was announced this summer.
With the release date fast-approaching, the group that helped define the ‘90s grunge movement has released a short documentary about the making of their 10th studio album, in which they are interviewed by Judd Apatow, Carrie Brownstein, Mark Richards and Steve Gleason.
A surprisingly emotional ode to Pearl Jam’s latest effort, it is clear throughout the film, created by Danny Clinch, that Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Matt Cameron and Stone Gossard have truly put their heart and soul into Lightning Bolt.
“Everybody’s kind of playing out of their minds on this record,” says frontman Eddie Vedder as clips of the band’s music video for their hectic lead-off single “Mind Your Manners” are shown, further proving his point.
When former NFL running back Steve Gleason, who is now living with ALS, asks the band which of the tracks they are most proud of, guitarist Mike McCready answers “Sirens;” a ballad which the band reveals McCready wrote in Los Angeles while listening to the constant sirens on the streets.
Gleason also poses the question as to why the band has waited so long in between records, in which bassist Jeff Ament answers, “It’s good to wait until we do feel like we have something to say,” and Vedder points out, “If you’re paying attention to the planet, I can find something to be angry about pretty quick.”
Lightning Bolt, produced by Brendan O’Brien, is due out on October 15. Pearl Jam will kick off a North American tour in support of the album on October 11 in Pittsburgh, PA.
