When covering a song, there are usually two clear options: emulate it note-for-note, or make it your own.
With their rendition of the classic “House of the Rising Sun,” Five Finger Death Punch has definitely taken the latter approach.
Made popular in the 1960s by the Animals, “House of the Rising Sun” has been recorded by many different artists over the years, some of which include Bob Dylan, Sinead O’Connor and most recently, Muse.
FFDP’s version is very much different from the rest, and in a special video released via Billboard.com, the bandmembers discuss how they changed up the classic song to give it a hard-rock vibe, most notably, by switching the song’s time signature from 6/8 to 4/4.
“We had the idea to do this for a while,” explains guitarist Zoltan Bathory. “The interesting thing about this song is that [it's] actually in a time signature of 6/8 which is a waltz…and rock music and waltz doesn’t necessarily mix right.”
He continues, “So basically the challenge was: ‘How do we make this song work? How do we take away that goofy vibe and how do we make it into a rock structure?’”
The song will be included on the band’s upcoming album, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell – Pt. 2, due out on November 19 via Prospect Park. The first part of the double album was released in July of this year, and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts.
