"Catacombs of the Black Vatican," Black Label Society's new album and first studio effort in four years, is off to a strong start. Released on April 8, the set debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Rock Albums, Metal Albums and Independent Albums charts, as well as No. 5 on the Billboard 200. The album was recorded at BLS founder and leader Zakk Wylde's Black Vatican studio on his 10-acre spread near Los Angeles, and he tells us that it was a fairly effortless recording process that started after the group finished its run on Megadeth's 2012 Gigantour: "After we got done with Gigantour, and I said, 'How much longer do we have 'til the fellas come out and work on this record?' It was 25 days, so I said, 'OK, I've got 25 days to write a record.' So every day I's go out in the garage, get my Marshall (amplifier), put it on low volume with reverb and step on the octave pedal and just play and get inspired. The guitar tone is so massive, but it's at low volume and just sounds awesome. And you just start jamming riffs and keep digging and digging and digging until you get stuff you like. I'd take my phone and record a riff, 'Got that one. Got that one' and just keep going. Then the guys came out and I'd show 'em what I had and we'd make songs out of them." Wylde and Black Label Society hit the road Wednesday (April 16) as headliners of this year's Revolver Golden Gods Tour. The group will also play at the Golden Gods Awards on April 23 in Los Angeles.
