Most bands would ride time out after the release of a double album before starting work on a follow-up, but about a year after the release of The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volumes 1 & 2, Five Finger Death Punch are looking to head back to the studio. In an interview with Meltdown from Detroit’s 101 WRIF, guitarist Jason Hook gave some insight as to why FFDP are so eager to record a follow-up:
“I think we just have this…we have this fear that we don’t want to lose any momentum. We’re pretty normal guys, and I think that the one thing we really enjoy is writing and recording our own material. So we’re always kind of preparing, so that when it comes time to work on something new, we’ve already done a little preparation, and I think we’re starting in August to do some tracks. On past albums, FFDP had great success with covers (like “Bad Company” and “House of the Rising Sun), but Hook revealed not every cover of theirs makes the cut, and that fans shouldn’t count on any new covers on the next album: “We did try on the last record…I sketched up a version of “Bulls on Parade” that I thought would’ve been pretty nasty, but everyone was like, ‘Ahhh…it’s a little too sacrilegious to go and cover that.’ And I remember on the ‘War Is The Answer’ record, we were playing around with that Cake song “Going the Distance” and that was horrific! So we scrapped that…That’s kinda it. You know, I think that it’s possible that we’ll leave the cover song thing alone for a while. You know, nothing against cover songs. We like to play music, and there’s a lot of great music out there. There’s nothing against it, but we’ve done a lot of it now, and it’s time to take a break from it, I guess.”
If FFDP are going to start recording in August, their stay in the studio won’t be long, especially since starting September 16, they’ll be heading out with Volbeat, Hellyeah and Nothing More on a 27-date U.S. tour. Looks like FFDP don’t want to lose momentum on the road, either.
