Metallica has released a studio version of its new song "Lords of Summer" for purchase online. "Lords of Summer -- First Pass Version" weighs in at eight minutes and is available at iTunes. Metallica premiered the song on March 16 in Bogata, Colombia, and has been playing it regularly during its shows this year. Drummer Lars Ulrich has described the song as "fairly representative" of where the group is headed for its next album, the follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic." The group has not said whether "Lords of Summer" will actually be on the album, though, and James Hetfield tells us that what works in concert doesn't always pan out in the recording studio: "There's a fine line. There's a lot of bands that I've seen tried to create anthems in the studio that work really good live, and then you get out live and it doesn't work. You can't really think too much. You've got to write music that you like, first of all, and you got to be clear about that. Trying to write the next sports theme for something so it's used around the country, it just doesn't work. It ends up being cheesy. You have to just go in honestly and write for that moment." Metallica is currently touring Europe through June 13 and plays the Heavy Montreal festival on August 9 but is otherwise sworn to completing the new album, most likely for a 2015 release.
