Sound bites from those closest to Kurt Cobain regarding his suicide 20 years ago are sure to garner attention, and recently two notable people in Cobain’s life made comments about his tragic death. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic sat down with ReasonTV for a lengthy interview (embedded above), and naturally Cobain’s death came up. When asked if Cobain’s passing was due to him being “too beautiful or sensitive for this world” (around the 45:07 mark), Novoselic said that drugs were a big part of his death, stating “He was probably pretty ripped when he decided to do what he did. If he would’ve had a clear mind, he wouldn’t have done it.” Perhaps the most chilling quote regarding Cobain recently came from his daughter, Francis Bean Cobain. Francis took to Twitter in response to pop star Lana Del Rey glamorizing the early deaths of Cobain and Amy Winehouse saying, “I wish I was dead already.” Francis responded to Del Rey (in multiple tweets) that, “The death of young musicians isn’t something to romanticize…I’ll never know my father because he died young & it becomes a desirable feat because ppl like u think it’s ‘cool’…Well, it’s f*cking not. Embrace life, because u only get one life. The ppl u mentioned wasted that life. Don’t be 1 of those ppl…ur too talented to waste it away.” Francis’s words were simple, straight to the point, and truly gut-wrenching to read. I give her credit for not going on a more hateful rant, because from where she’s coming from and what she's had to endure her entire life, she'd have every right to.
