Alcohol and drugs have consumed the lives of some of rocks legends throughout their careers, and Slash is no stranger to that type of lifestyle. That all changed eight years ago according to the guitarist.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 6 Music’s Shaun Keaveny, the iconic guitarist revealed to the world the very first time he went out onto the stage and did something very unfamiliar to most rockers…performed sober.
Years of substance abuse had taken Slash down a road of destruction, and finally, in 2006, he had enough of the up and down lifestyle. Rehab was the answer.
“Well, I wouldn’t die…I finally got to a point where it was like, ‘OK I’m not going anywhere, so I’m gonna have to sort this out,” said Slash. “It wasn’t that I had any kind of death wish per se, but I really took everything to the extreme and didn’t care.”
Slash said that during rehab he left for a brief time to tour around California with Velvet Revolver, and that’s when the moment had finally come…performing sober was all too real.
“I left rehab and went out and did this tour, and it was the first time I’d been on stage sober, ever,” said Slash.”
Wrap your mind around that: It took Slash over two decades to perform sober! Good news is he has been clean ever since that 2006 rehab stint.
…And in even better news: Slash’s third album, World on Fire, will be released on September 15th.
While Slash is now a sober rocker, he definitely hasn’t lost his edge. He is still rocking out like he always has (just without his buddy Jack or Mr. Brownstone.)
