Deftones Release First Official Single from New Album
By: Gary Graff
10/4/2012

Although it's not coming out until November 13, Deftones are certainly doing a good job of getting fans fired up for its new album, "Koi No Yokan."

The group recently released a teaser track called "Leather," while "Tempest" is just out as the first official single from the quartet's seventh studio album.

Frontman Chino Moreno says the full album holds to the group's aggressive past but also re-embraces elements that may have taken a back seat on more recent releases:

"Some of my favorite things about deftones are the dynamics. Yes, we're a heavy band, but we're not just in-your-face, aggro, the whole time punching you in the face. There's a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there's also this very soothing element where there's a lot of soundscapes."

"I really feel like we really reached a peak in our dynamics on this record, having those two qualities that are so far apart -- the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression."

"Koi No Yokan" was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters) and is Deftones' second with bassist Sergio Vega standing in for Chi Cheng, who remains disabled after a 2008 auto accident.

Deftones will preview more "Koi No Yokan" material when it kicks off a 22-date tour on October 9 in Ventura, California.
