Tool has been pretty quiet since it released 10,000 Days all the way back in 2006. Ideally, fans won’t have to actually wait 10,000 days, but according to vocalist Maynard James Keenan in an interview with Radio Futuro (via Banana 101.5), a 2013 new album release is out of the question...or so he says.
“[There is] no new disc,” Keenan said. “Not this year…I have not written any songs. So no, there is nothing.”
Keenan’s notorious history regarding April Fool’s Day jokes and vague to misleading updates on upcoming albums doesn’t help his claim, not to mention that there has been plenty of inconsistency over the past couple months about how much songwriting that the band has actually accomplished.
Last December, the official Tool website’s webmaster apparently listened to some unfinished tracks with members of the band and posted, “I heard a lot of new Tool music (sans Maynard). This was the most new material that I’ve heard so far, although a few of the riffs and arrangements were familiar. So, what did I think? Dare I say that it sounded like…Tool.”
Keeping the ‘sans Maynard’ aspect in mind, Keenan has also stated that he doesn’t plan on releasing anything with his other band, A Perfect Circle. However, his side project, Puscifer, has a scheduled February 19 release for its new EP Donkey Punch The Night which is likely his top priority.
Otherwise, the band has still made plenty of headlines. Two undisclosed members in the band ate asphalt at separate times last month, learning that Vespa scooters aren’t always the easiest candidates for burning rubber. One of them sustained a dislocated shoulder and broken ribs, temporarily halting any supposed progress on songwriting. The official statement from the band’s webmaster last week (via Classic Rock Magazine) was nevertheless fairly optimistic:
“Because of the physical nature or the musical instruments involved [in the accidents], nine days of jamming were lost, although I'm happy to report that the person involved is recovering nicely. So much so, in fact, that writing sessions resumed on Monday, Jan. 21.”
Whether Keenan was actually riding one of the accursed scooters and had some sort of head-trauma induced epiphany that he wouldn’t write a Tool album this year may be a stretch, but at this point, no one knows for sure.
