Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corganhas spearheaded a few weird project in recent years, but his latest stunt – appearing in a 30-second TV ad for a Chicago-based furniture chain – has to be the weirdest.
In the ad, Corgan, along with some pro wrestlers, unleash fury on guys in suits when Corgan loses in a game of musical chairs. Mayhem quickly ensues and when one of the wrestlers goes to smash a chair on a suit’s head WWE-style and Corgan exclaims, “That’s a Walter E. Smithe chair!” referencing the furniture store.
Corgan, a wrestling fan since childhood, began the independent wrestling company featured in the ad called Resistance Pro in 2011. The rocker recently revealed to NME that he is in talks to make a reality show about running the company too! Corgan explained, “Our number one priority is to get a national TV show, whether it's the reality show we have in the works or a weekly wrestling show.”
Besides living out his boyhood fantasies, Billy is set for a UK tour with Smashing Pumpkins this summer in Manchester (July 1), Glasgow (July 2), and London (July 22). For more information about the band’s tour and their latest album, 2012’s “Oceania,” check out www.smashingpumpkins.com.
