The announcement came today (March 6th) that the currently separated group will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough album Green by re-releasing a deluxe edition of the record on May 14th.
Green, which marked R.E.M.’s 6th studio effort, was originally released in 1988 via Warner Bros. The anniversary release will come as a two-disc set from Rhino; the first disc being a remastered version of the original album and the second, a live set of 21 songs recorded in Greensboro, NC during R.E.M.’s 1989 Green World Tour.
Like past reissues from the band, the Green anniversary edition will come in a hard clamshell box, and also feature a foldout poster, four postcards, and unique liner notes penned by Uncut editor Allan Jones.
As if this wasn’t enough, the band has also announced that will also be releasing a limited-edition, five-track EP in celebration of Record Store Day on April 20th. The EP will be made up of live bonus tracks that weren’t included in the Green deluxe edition, including “I Remember California” and “So. Central Rain.”
