Rock stars already entertain us through the medium of great music, but it's always interesting to see how they fare in front of the camera. It's pretty hard for actors to make waves as musicians as it is, but how hard is it for musicians to make it as actors? Here are some of our favorite artists who have made the jump from the stage to the big and small screens.
Flea can slap the daylights out of his bass while on stage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but in the 1998 comedy flick Big Lebowski, he’d probably find no meaning in doing anything like that, playing the role of one of the German nihilists that continue to pester The Dude for the entire movie. He also pesters Back to the Future’s Marty McFly as his shady friend, Douglas J. Needles, and tries to get the series protagonist into some illegal business.
2. Jack White
He may be cast in a different role, but Jack White is still in his element as the guitar-playing “Georgia” in the 2003 Civil War epic Cold Mountain. White also steps into the shoes of the immortal Elvis Presley, albeit for less than a minute and without uttering or strumming a single note for the 2007 comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
3. Courtney Love
The Hole lead singer took on the role of playing the troubled late wife of American pornography magnate Larry Flynt opposite Edward Norton in The People vs. Larry Flynt. She also portrays Lynne Margulies in the movie Man on the Moon which revolves around American entertainer Andy Kaufman. Jim Carrey lends his eccentric talents in a fitting fulfillment of Kaufman’s likeness.
4. Sebastian Bach
The former Skid Row member stayed in character as a nameless rocker in the 2012 rock musical Rock of Ages and has made some appearances in the HBO series Californication and the network Warner Brothers hit TV show Gilmore Girls.
5. Jon Bon Jovi
The ageless frontman for Bon Jovi has been all over the movie and TV scene outside of his day job as a career musician. He recently was intertwined into a romantic subplot as Jensen in the 2011 movie New Year’s Eve, appeared in 10 episodes of the long-running TV drama Ally McBeal, and even had a role as a lieutenant in the World War II action-drama U-571 about a crew of American submariners trying to survive in a crippled German U-boat. And that’s the short list.
