Record Store Day (April 20) was a huge success this year, especially when it came to vinyl.
According to new figures from Nielsen Soundscan (via Billboard) independent record stores across the world sold 200,000 vinyl LPs this year as opposed to 147,000 last year, an increase of 36 percent. In addition, vinyl LP sales jumped an incredible 217 percent compared to the week prior and comprised 37 percent of all albums sold that week, up from 28 percent in 2012.
Last week, independent record stores saw their highest overall retail sales since Christmas. Album sales in every format at indie stores jumped by 59 percent compared to the week before and by 3 percent compared to last year’s Record Store Day.
Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz attributes the rise in sales this year to a wide selection of special releases.
“Record Store Day increased the number of special releases we did this year to over 400 titles, as compared to about 300 last year,” says Kurtz (via Billboard). “This was done mainly to accommodate regional releases and small runs from independently owned labels.”
Vinyl shoppers showed their love for the special releases too, with 14 of the exclusive vinyl releases selling more than 1,000 copies throughout the week. The 7 inch single No Fun, featuring The Stooges’ original recording of the song and a 2002 cover by The Black Keys, was the highest selling RSD exclusive with 2,000 copies sold out of the 7,000 made.
